Solar powered mini-grids are on the rise in Africa and will contribute in a massive scale to the continent's electrification. Ethiopia also, with its strategy to develop a climate resilient green economy has fixed in its National Electrification Plan the need to electrify far-remote areas with means of solar-powered minigrids. More than 200 mini-grids are planned to be implemented in the coming years. GIZ ENDEV likes to contribute to this endeavour with the currently developed pilot-project of eight cooperative-operated mini-grids as well as with capacity building contriubutions of which this training is part.
Solar mini-grids are relatively complex infrastructural projects involving civil- and electro-mechanical engineering but also legal, financial and operational and monitoring topics are to be well considered to develop a sustainable project that can give service for many years if not even decades. The course is too short to deeply cover every topic but we see it important that management but also the actual hands-on staff are aware about the whole process and see the importance of linking with their respective specialized departments.
